Children with special needs
Expert Panel > Children with Special Needs
As a parent, you will find your children a source of enjoyment and inspiration. While all children may sometimes frustrate their parents with their antics and behaviour, children with special needs also need you to love and encourage them.
Parents of children with special needs are often at a loss when they find out their children need special attention. At the same time, these parents are relieved as a diagnosis means they can now go about helping their child develop.
Depending on the individual child, treatment and care in various forms are available. You can also seek out support groups where caring parents like yourself are able to share their experiences and encourage each other when they feel disheartened.
Your child has special needs if he/she is handicapped or has been diagnosed with any of the following:
Blind / Deaf
Your child has partial or total loss of sight or hearing.
Downs Syndrome
Due to an extra or irregular chromosome in some or all of his/her bodys cells, your child has impaired physical and mental development.
Cerebral Palsy
Your child has some level of mental retardation, may have learning disabilities and vision, speech, hearing or language problems. It is a non-progressive brain disorder.
Autism Spectrum Disorder
Your child has difficulty with communication, learning and social skills. Treatments are varied and can include specialized intervention or changes in diet.
ADHD
Your child displays one or more of these symptoms: inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. The most successful treatment combines behavioural treatment with carefully-managed medication.
This is not a comprehensive list. Do speak to your paediatrician if you have any concerns.
